Omar Mateen was known by some in the LGBT community
by Nathan'ette Burdine: June 21, 2016

Ty Smith told The Orlando Sentinel that he would often see Omar Mateen at Pulse nightclub. Pulse is an LGBT nightclub.

And on June 12, 2016, Mateen walked into the nightclub and killed 49 people and injured 53 others. Smith, who regularly hangs out at the nightclub, described Mateen as being standoffish and rude.

Smith also hinted that Mateen didn’t have a good relationship with his [Mateen] father, Mir Seddique. Smith is quoted as saying, “Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent…I remember him saying things about his dad at times. He told us he had a wife and child.”

Mateen was killed during a shootout with the Orlando Police. Mateen was a self-radicalized Islamic terrorist. During the shooting, he pledged his support to ISIS’ leader Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi.

Members of the radical Islamic community view homosexuality as a sin that is punishable by death. During January of this year, ISIS killed a 15-year-old Syrian boy who they alleged was engaged in a homosexual relationship with one of its top officers. Abu Zaid al-Jazrawi is the officer who is alleged to have had a relationship with the 15-year-old boy.

A Sharia court recommended that the officer be put to death, but the ISIS leaders decided to send him to Iraq. Seddique hinted that Mateen’s breaking point happened after he and his son saw two men kissing each other.

Mateen’s homophobic views aren’t new to those who knew him at work and at school. His former colleagues and classmates said that he would often express homophobic, racists, sexists, and pro-terrorist views.

In 2013 and 2014, the FBI investigated Mateen after the agency received reports about Mateen’s pro-terrorist views.

The FBI closed both cases after they weren’t able to find enough evidence to charge him with a crime. Last Tuesday, more reports about Mateen and his relationship with the LGBT community were released.

The Daily Mail reported that several people who knew Mateen said that he was a closeted homosexual whose religion and father caused him to feel conflicted and ashamed about his [Omar Mateen] feelings for other men.

Jim Van Horn told the Daily Mail that Mateen was “a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men.” Cord Cedeno described Mateen as being “creepy” and said that he recognized Mateen from the LGBT dating app, Grindr.

Kevin West told the Daily Mail that he and Mateen had communicated for a year via another LGBT dating app, Jack’d.
